The other day, I was reading part of Musashi Miyamoto's "Book of Five Rings" and I read a portion that stated that you should take all of what you learn from the book and apply it to your daily life. If you want to be a martial artist, continue to be one in your daily life, and not just when you practice.
I attended a Seminar by my Sensei, Blaine Feyen, and this was also a subject that was touched upon. We were told that if you want to apply the martial arts to your daily life, it should change everything, not just rolling instead of tripping and falling flat on your face.
Personally, the changes I've noticed after only a year of training have been great. I'm sure I'll sound like a broken record player by saying the changes I've experienced, but it's so astounding to me that I've changed this much in one year's time.
I lacked self esteem, thought horribly of myself and even at one pointed hated myself for the person I let myself become. I was unhappy, and miserable. In one year, by just throwing myself into my training, I've become happier. My posture has changed, old aches and pains have gone away. I think better of myself now than I've ever thought in years. I've forgiven myself for things I've done, forgiven others for hurting me... If you are truly going to dedicate yourself to a martial art, your whole perspective changes so drastically. It's really amazing what happens once your mind has changed and becomes more peaceful.
